I am so excited to finally share with you my modern Mother Earth costume! It has been a couple months in the making and I am so happy to finally share all the details with you. For this post I am also joining with some talented bloggers to bring you some Really Awesome Halloween Costumes, so make sure you get all the information at the bottom of this post.
I absolutely love Halloween and creating fun Halloween couples costumes. I sure you have already seen the unique Modern Father Time costume I created for the bumblebreeblog husband. And really, who could forget our Mr and Mrs Potato Head costumes, Monster costumes, Storm Cloud or Storm Chaser costumes? Isn’t Halloween just the best?
Just like the Father Time costume, I wanted to give my Mother Earth costume a modern update. Instead of a store bought costume with fake leaves and tulle I wanted to create something that the modern Mother Earth would wear, especially something that went with some adorable and sensible wedge sandals, of course.
I knew that I wanted to wear a short, fun, hippie type of dress. With the popularity of Boho I thought this dress would fit perfect with a modern update of Mother Earth. I got this wonderful dress at a vintage clothing store in LA and totally fell in love with the flower embroidery, cap sleeves and wonderful neckline that gives this costume a flirty feel without being trashy. I also thought the Marsala color of the dress was a great contrast to the typical green and was a wonderful nod to the color of the year.
The Fairy Cuff
I knew that my Mother Earth costume would need some wonderful modern accessories to really create a complex costume. While looking for inspiration I stumbled across fairy arm cuffs on Etsy and I knew I need to create my own. Its super easy and quick to make and was a wonderful addition to my costume.
- wire (I used 28 gauge)
- Floral tape
- Fake Flowers
- Flower Stamens
I started by cutting a 2′ long piece of wire and wrapping it around my arm. This step doesn’t have to be too precise, because the wire will straighten during the next couple steps. I used my pliers to create a tight spiral on each end of my wire to create a wonderful growing vine look. Once I had my basic shape I wrapped my wire in the floral tape, adding the flowers and stamens through out the design.
After I finished wrapping it, I went back through and added extra floral tape to places where I didn’t think it covered the wire enough. After the cuff was finished I wrapped it around my arm again, paying special attention to the area that I wrapped around my finger. The best part of the fairy cuff is that you can create it to fit your design and the wire is flexible so you can always manipulate it to fit perfectly every time.
The fairy cuff gave the modern Mother Earth costume the perfect update and is the perfect accessory for every potential force of nature.
Just like the Father Time costume this modern update of Mother Earth would not be complete without its own temporary tattoo. The wonderful spirally font went perfect with the costume design and fit wonderful next to the fairy cuff. If I am committing to a modern update of Mother Earth, then of course the bird nest and twig covered hair had to go. A rustic leather braided headband, fresh flowers and a simple up-do of twists and braids was exactly what this modern update needed.
I created the headband myself with some simple leather cord that I braided and tied off with a simple knot. Sometimes the simplest creations create the biggest impact. Braided headbands worm across the forehead are very current and you know our modern Mother Earth would be rocking it with all the other hipsters.
The addition of the live baby’s breath also added a fresh touch to the costume. It was very simple to add to the up-do along the line of the headband and gave the look a nod to the 1920’s that I know Mother Earth would appreciate.
My simple and functional up-do was done by Danielle from Studio 94 Salon in Jamul. She did a wonderful job and saw my vision for the up-do perfectly. If you are ever in the area you should definitely stop in and have your hair done. All the girls there are just wonderful. Make sure you tell them I sent you. 😉
The Photographer and Location
Once again I would like to thank Melinda Lara Photography for the wonderful photos that she took. In case you were wondering all this photos were taken at Iron Mountain Trail Head in Poway, CA, which was the perfect location to show off our costumes. Isn’t it totally the place that Father Time and Mother Earth with go to hang out with each other? The vastness of the tree lined trail also created the perfect backdrop for this modern couple’s love story, don’t you agree?
Thank you for taking the time to come check out all the details on my wonderful modern Mother Earth costume. I hope you feel inspired to create a modern update of your own.
